THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND DIETARY INTAKE AND WAIST HIP RATIO AMONG STREET SWEEPERS IN KALISARI DISTRICT, EAST SURABAYA

Background: Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) is an important indicator of abdominal obesity, influenced by physical activity and dietary patterns. Among street sweepers, high physical activity is not always accompanied by balanced dietary intake, allowing the risk of abdominal fat accumulation to persist. Objective: To analyze the relationship between physical activity and dietary intake with WHR among street sweepers in Kalisari Subdistrict, East Surabaya. Methods: This analytical study employed a cross-sectional design involving 55 respondents selected from a population of 200 street sweepers using purposive sampling. Physical activity was assessed using the IPAQ-SF, while dietary intake was measured using the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). WHR was obtained from waist and hip circumference measurements. Data were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression. Results: WHR was normal in 41.8% and high in 58.2% of respondents. Physical activity levels were low (0%), moderate (12.7%), and high (87.3%), with no significant association with WHR (p=0.453). Carbohydrate intake was inadequate (38.2%), adequate (49.1%), and excessive (12.7%) with WHR (p=0.650). Protein intake was inadequate (10.9%), adequate (50.9%), and excessive (38.2%) with WHR (p=0.560). Fat intake was inadequate (23.6%), adequate (45.5%), and excessive (30.9%) with WHR (p=0.492). Conclusion: There was no significant association between physical activity or dietary intake and WHR among street sweepers. Other factors, such as age and sex, may influence body fat distribution.
