THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUNSCREEN USE AND THE SEVERITY OF ACNE VULGARIS AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS AT WIDYA MANDALA CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY SURABAYA

Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit that primarily affects individuals during adolescence and early adulthood. Ultraviolet (UV) exposure is known to exacerbate acne conditions. Sunscreen is used to protect the skin from UV exposure; however, some formulations are suspected to be comedogenic and may trigger acne. Objective: To determine the relationship between sunscreen use as well as the severity of acne vulgaris among medical students from Widya Mandala Catholic Institute Surabaya. An experimental research design with pretest and posttest control groups was used in this study. A total of 48 students who met participants were selected based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, which were grouped into an intervention group using Azarine Hydrasoothe Sunscreen Gel SPF 45 PA++++ and a control group using a glycerin-containing moisturizer. Acne severity was assessed using the Lehmann classification before and after a four-week intervention. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with the help of SPSS version 29. Results: Prior to the intervention, the majority of participants had mild acne (70.83%). After four weeks of treatment, there was no significant difference between the sunscreen group and the control group in terms of changes in acne severity (p > 0.05). In the intervention group, three participants showed a reduction in acne severity, while in the control group, two participants showed improvement and two participants experienced worsening. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant correlation between sunscreen usage and the severity of acne vulgaris among medical students of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya.
